Cabo News & Updates July

The summer season in Los Cabos has a lot to offer. From surfing and fishing, to golf and adventure, the Baja coast has something for everyone seeking an adrenaline rush. This summer the destination will host the first ATP 250 Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open, along with numerous world-renowned fishing tournaments, art exhibitions and more.

Below you’ll find more information on the various events and happenings this summer, to help you plan your next adventure to Los Cabos.

From June 7-12, Los Cabos hosted the 4th annual Los Cabos Open of Surf, one of the most important surf competitions in Mexico and Latin America. The Pro Junior WSL male winner was Griffin Colapinto, originally from the U.S. Colapinto took over the first place standing from Nolan Rapoza, who finished second in the rankings. Cole Houshmand took fourth place, and Eithan Osborne came in fifth; he was a first time competitor at this year’s Open. Colapinto’s win came as a huge surprise to onlookers, keeping things exciting until the very end.

At the Pro Junior female competition, where many had previously competed in the QS6000, Australian surfer Sophie McCulloch won first place. Summer Macedo took second place and Alyssa Lock finished third. Australian competitor Bronte Macaulay finished in first place at the Women’s QS6000. Second place was given to first time participant Dominic Barona. In third place was Brazilian competitor Silvana Lima, who said her board was magic throughout the entire tournament but unfortunately she was unable to find a suitable wave in the final round. Los Cabos looks forward to next year’s Open of Surf, and its participants returning in 2017.

On June 1, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts officially announced their new name as the Sheraton Grand Los Cabos, Hacienda del Mar. This welcomes a new level of excellence for the brand called “Sheraton Grand,” which recognizes the best hotels in its portfolio, their distinguished designs, excellence in service and top of the line guest experiences. The Sheraton Grand Los Cabos joins the Sheraton Grand Rio Hotel & Resort in Brazil and the Sheraton Grand Panama as the most distinguished hotels in the region. Sheraton Grand is one of the many initiatives in part with the Sheraton 2020 plan, which is designed to consolidate Sheraton as a preferred hotel brand.

The ATP 250 Los Cabos Mexican Tennis Open will take place August 8-13, with new faces rounding up the Top 10 list. Dominic Thiem, who ranks eighth in the world will be headlining this year’s tournament. Thiem, the 22-year-old Austrian player, has already won three titles this year and is considered by both the press and other players to be the revelation of this year’s season. This was especially true after beating David Goffin and advancing, for the first time, to the semifinals at the Roland-Garros against No. 1 seed Novak Djokovic.

Thiem’s rapid advancement to the list of elite players is a huge accomplishment, especially considering that in 2015 the Top 10 only added one new member, 29-year-old Kevin Anderson. In fact, the addition of the South African player did not represent a revival in men’s tennis. With Thiem closing in on the first place rankings, it’s only a matter of time that Australian player Nick Kyrgios, German player Alexander Zverec and other young tennis players will make the long-awaited jump into the “#NextGen .”

Among the list of competitors at this year’s Los Cabos ATP 250 are Dominic Thiem, 22-year-old, Australian player Bernard Tomic, 6’9 and 31st place Croatian player Ivo Karlovic, and French player Jeremy Chardy who ranks 33rd in the world. Also competing this year will be American player Sam Querrey (37), Madrid native Fernando Verdasco (51) and Catalan player Tommy Robredo (72).
