Ficovich and Shapovalov Shine on Their Way to the Quarterfinals at the Mifel Tennis Open in Los Cabos

Ficovich y Shapovalov

This Wednesday’s round of matches at the Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo featured two outstanding performances: Argentine Juan Pablo Ficovich, who achieved the most important victory of his career, and Canadian Denis Shapovalov, with his fastest win of the year.

Ficovich, currently No. 148 in the PIF ATP Rankings, secured a surprising victory against Frenchman Quentin Halys (No. 52) in three sets, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-3, in a high-intensity duel that catapulted him to the quarterfinals of an ATP tournament for the first time.

The Argentine had a chance to close out the match in the second set, serving 5-4 up, but Halys managed to force a tiebreak. However, Ficovich rallied with grit, breaking the Frenchman’s serve in his first two games of the deciding set and maintaining control until sealing the victory. Before this tournament, the South American had only won one main draw match on the tour (Córdoba 2022, against Federico Coria), but in Los Cabos, he now has two wins and, with that, provisionally rises to 136th in the live rankings.

His next opponent will come from the duel between American Aleksandar Kovacevic and Mexican Luis Carlos Álvarez.

Shapovalov Destroys in 60 Minutes

Meanwhile, Denis Shapovalov (No. 33 ATP) needed just 60 minutes to defeat American Govind Nanda with a resounding 6-1, 6-2, his fastest victory so far this year.

With this result, the Canadian became the first player to qualify for the quarterfinals at this edition of the ATP 250 in Los Cabos, breaking a five-month streak without reaching this stage on the professional circuit. The last time he achieved this feat was last February, at the ATP 500 in Acapulco, where he reached the semifinals.

The champion of the Dallas tournament at the beginning of the season, Shapovalov will now look to string together multiple victories for the first time since Acapulco, and his next opponent will be the winner of the match between German Daniel Altmaier and Australian Tristan Schoolkate.

The excitement continues to grow at the Los Cabos tournament, which is slowly defining its title contenders in the final stretch of the competition.
