Dunlap and Valimaki share the lead after the first round in Los Cabos

Dunlap y Valimaki

American Nick Dunlap and Finn Sami Valimaki took the lead at the World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante after carding rounds of 61 (-11) to open the tournament. With that score, they tied the 18-hole record for both the championship and the course.

Dunlap finished his round with nine birdies and an eagle on the 18th hole, while Valimaki recorded 11 birdies in a bogey-free round. They lead the leaderboard by two strokes over a group of five players who shot 64 (-8): Kris Ventura, Matti Schmid, Chad Ramey, and Andrew Putnam.

For Dunlap, 21, the 2024 American Express Champion while still an amateur, this round represents a significant boost after an inconsistent season with only one previous top-10 finish. “Today was one of those days. Golf had been tough lately, and today was the complete opposite,” said the American, who shot 14/14 fairways for the first time in his PGA TOUR career.

Best Latin American of the Day: Emilio González (-6 T14)

Mexican Emilio González was the best of the 10 Latin Americans in the competition. The player from San Miguel de Allende carded a bogey-free 66, closing with birdies on holes 17 and 18. He also stood out for hitting every fairway and every green on the course, a statistic he shared with Dunlap as the best of the day.

González will compete as an official PGA TOUR member starting in 2026, after finishing in the top five on the 2025 Korn Ferry Tour Points List.
