As part of the Los Cabos International Film Festival, the short documentary “A Lifetime: 75 Years of Las Cruces” was presented. This piece reconstructs the origins of this emblematic area in southern Baja California Sur and pays tribute to those who had the vision to discover its natural and human potential.

Before the screening, the importance of remembering the origins of the places we enjoy today was emphasized, highlighting that behind their development were people who recognized the beauty of their beaches, the sea, and the possibility of building community. The documentary narrates how, following an aerial survey in 1946, the Las Cruces area was discovered and how, a decade later, the first tourist development was established in the Palmilla area, marking the beginning of a historic transformation for the region.

The film is narrated by Abelardo Rodríguez Montijo, a key figure in this story, whose vision was crucial for the future of Los Cabos. Following the screening, a discussion was led by Armando Figaredo, a journalist from Baja California Sur and the project’s director, who has twice received the State Journalism Award.

He thanked the festival organizers for selecting the documentary, as well as the Rodríguez family for entrusting him with telling this story, especially Cristina Rodríguez, who spearheaded the project to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Las Cruces. He also acknowledged the work of the team of collaborators who participated in the production.

During his remarks, he recalled the legacy of Abelardo Rodríguez Montijo, whom he described as a visionary whose work laid the foundation for the development of Los Cabos. He also highlighted the contributions of other key players in the region’s growth, such as Eduardo Sánchez Navarro and the Questro Group, for their economic and social impact beginning in the 1980s.

The presentation concluded with a call to continue producing this type of documentary that preserves the historical memory of Baja California Sur and allows us to understand the origin of the destinations that are now international tourist landmarks.
