• The initiative kicks off in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, with the goal of inspiring a new generation of children and young people through flag football, combining sports, education, and training both in the classroom and on the field.

Los Cabos, Baja California Sur – The San Francisco 49ers, in partnership with the 49ers Foundation, Banorte, and NFL Mexico, announced the launch of 49ers Flag Mexico, presented by Banorte, a school initiative created to open new opportunities for children and young people in Mexico through sports.

More than just a flag football program, 49ers Flag Mexico was born with a clear vision: to introduce new generations to an experience that promotes confidence, teamwork, discipline, leadership, and healthy habits. With this launch, the 49ers reaffirm their commitment to Mexico and take an important step toward making a positive impact on communities, schools, and families, investing in the holistic development of youth from an early age. Starting this school year, 49ers Flag Mexico officially launches in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, where up to 15 public and private schools will integrate flag football into their Physical Education curriculum. With plans to expand to other cities and regions, the program aims to reach up to 75 schools nationwide in its first year, building a growth platform that brings the sport to more children and young people across the country.

“Bringing our flag football program to Mexico permanently fills us with pride and enthusiasm. Today, with the launch of 49ers Flag Mexico, we are turning that vision into a reality,” said Justin Prettyman, 49ers Vice President of Philanthropy and Executive Director of the 49ers Foundation. “We deeply believe in the power of sports to transform lives, strengthen communities, and pave the way for future generations. With this program, we want more students in Mexico to have access to a positive experience that motivates them to grow both on and off the field. We are excited to build this effort alongside NFL Mexico and Banorte, and to be part of a brighter future for thousands of young people.”

Through 49ers Flag Mexico, participating schools will receive equipment and a comprehensive curriculum in Spanish, designed for easy integration into Physical Education classes. In addition, teachers will receive in-person and virtual training from leading figures in Mexican flag football, including former 49ers offensive lineman Alfredo Gutiérrez, as well as two coaches widely recognized for their experience and leadership: Coach Kelly (Arely Monserrat Pérez García) and Coach Odin (Odin Gracia Garcia), from Los Cabos.

The program is also designed to create memorable experiences within the schools. At the end of each school year, students will be able to participate in an inter-school tournament, where they will not only put what they’ve learned into practice but also experience the excitement of the game, strengthen ties with their community, and discover new ways to develop through sports.

As part of the launch of this initiative, the kickoff event includes a training clinic for teachers, led by coaches from 49ers Flag Mexico, to provide tools for teaching the sport in a practical, accessible, and fun way. In addition, 49ers EDU, the STEAM education arm of the 49ers Foundation, will conduct an educational session in Spanish for local youth, integrating learning, creativity, and innovation into the athletic endeavor.

As a presenting partner of the NFL Mexico Flag program and the 49ers Flag Mexico initiative, Banorte plays a fundamental role in the launch and sustainability of the program, reinforcing its commitment to the development of children and young people, as well as to creating opportunities that generate a real impact in communities across Mexico.

“For Banorte, partnerships in sports go beyond sponsorship: they are platforms for generating a lasting social impact,” commented Carla Juan Chelala, CMO of Banorte. “The launch of 49ers Flag Mexico allows us to expand access to sports, education, and personal development for thousands of young people, reinforcing our commitment to inclusion, community growth, and the future of flag football in Mexico.”

Mexico holds a very special place for the 49ers. In recent years, the organization has strengthened its connection with Mexican fans and has found a passionate, close-knit, and energetic community in the country. With 49ers Flag Mexico, that bond evolves into something even deeper: a concrete commitment to the future, to young talent, and to the power of sports as a tool for change.

At a time when flag football is experiencing historic growth, the 49ers want more children and young people to discover the game, learn its values, and feel part of something bigger. This initiative not only promotes the development of the sport, but also represents an invitation to dream big, to compete, to collaborate, and to believe in what is possible.
