The Mifel Tennis Open Celebrates Its Tenth Edition with International Stars, Free Access to Qualifying, and a Commitment to Mexican Tennis

The Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo is ready to celebrate its tenth edition with a field of top-level players, new experiences for fans, and a renewed commitment to the development of Mexican tennis, organizers announced during the official press conference prior to the tournament's start. During the presentation, the tournament director, Geoffrey Fernández, was accompanied by representatives from Mifel, the Baja California Sur Tourism Secretariat, the Los Cabos City Council, and FITURCA, who highlighted the tournament's consolidation as one of the most important sporting events in the country. Roberto Gabriel Álvarez Castillo, director of Banca Mifel Los Cabos, emphasized the tournament's growth since its first edition. "Mifel has grown with the tennis tournament since 2017. From 12,000 attendees to 35,000, the impact of the Mifel Open on Los Cabos is impressive," he stated. On behalf of the State Government, the Undersecretary of Tourism, Fernando Ojeda, emphasized that reaching a decade of history confirms the project's strength. "Continuity reflects the effort, the overcoming of challenges and obstacles. Today, it is an event of excellence, a world-class event, that strengthens sports tourism and positions Baja California Sur in this segment," he stated. Among the main new features of this edition is free admission for the public during the qualifying rounds on July 25 and 26, with the goal of bringing professional tennis closer to a greater number of families. In addition, the tournament will incorporate a revamped culinary offering led by renowned chef Enrique Olvera with his Criollo concept, as well as a wide range of entertainment activities such as Kids Night, a Silent Disco, concerts, player presentations, and shows for attendees. On the sporting front, the main draw will be headlined by Czech Jiri Lehecka, currently ranked 12th in the world, accompanied by players such as Luciano Darderi, Francisco Cerúndolo, Karen Khachanov, Cameron Norrie, and defending champion Denis Shapovalov. They will be joined by special guests Grigor Dimitrov, the young Frenchman Moïse Kouamé, and Mexican Rodrigo Pacheco, who received a wildcard to compete in both the singles and doubles tournaments, where he will partner for the first time with Santiago González. Fernández emphasized that the tournament aims to become a platform for promoting new generations of Mexican tennis players. In that regard, he announced a junior tournament, organized in coordination with CONADE (National Commission for Physical Culture and Sport) and the Mexican Tennis Federation, in which the best Mexican players under 18 years of age will participate. “We lack Mexican singles players, and that’s the vision we’re bringing for the first time to work on and attract better players,” said the tournament director, who assured that the strategy aims to yield results in the medium and long term. Regarding the event’s impact, Fernández highlighted that the tournament currently generates more than 2,300 direct and indirect jobs and that the operational staff is now entirely composed of residents of Baja California Sur, reflecting the deep roots the competition has established in the destination. Regarding attendance, he acknowledged that the World Cup temporarily slowed ticket sales, although he is confident of surpassing the record attendance of more than 35,000 registered in the previous edition. With a combination of high-level tennis, entertainment, gastronomy, and promotion of national talent, the Mifel Tennis Open will seek to celebrate its tenth anniversary, reaffirming Los Cabos as one of the leading venues for international sports in Mexico.
