The Humpback Whale Song in Los Cabos, B.C.S.

The Humpback Whale 2

The humpback whale season in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur that began at the end of December has been very active, mainly at the beginning of February.

This marine mammal can measure up to 16 meters and weigh up to 45 tons.

They feed in summer in the cold waters of the Arctic and travel, winter to winter, more than 9 thousand kilometers to the warm Mexican waters to mate and give birth to their calves.

All whales communicate but especially the humpback.

Jorge Urbán, PhD. in Sciences and Director of the Marine Mammal Program of the UABCS: “… The humpback whale has a particular sound that only males make and only do it during the breeding season… it is called song because it is a sound structured that we can well recognize what are called themes, each theme has different phrases and each phrase has different units … and so in such a way that this year’s song is a bit different from the one they had last year “

Thanks to this condition, off the coast of Los Cabos the experience of listening to their singing through a hydrophone while a musician plays an instrument has been promoted as one of the unusual attractions

Oscar Ortíz, Tourism service provider: “… People love to go in private, watch the sunset and be able to listen to them … we have combined with certain instruments and the result has been extraordinary.”

Mariel Gómez, local tourist: “… As I say, that’s how you feel all the emotion, it’s a totally different experience, it’s all the senses together in the same place and it was super nice …”

For the violinist himself it was a unique presentation.

Gerardo Gómez, violinist: “It’s like instead of having the orchestra live, you have the orchestra but from nature, right? That is the song of the whales that is very different to play this … with an accompaniment like this … “

In addition to enjoying a spectacular sunset, listening to the song of these magnificent specimens is an unforgettable experience.
