With tributes to Spike Lee and Adam Driver concluded the seventh edition of LCIFF

The closing ceremony for the seventh edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival took place in Cabo San Lucas at the Cultural Pavilion.

International stars such as Adam Driver and filmmakers Spike Lee and Terry Gilliam paraded the Red Carpet.

Also Mexican national figures such as Benny Ibarra, Celina del Villar, Leonardo de Lozane, Sandra Echeverria, Martha Higareda were present, amongst others.

The Exceptional Contribution to Cinema History Tribute was given to the legendary American filmmaker Spike Lee. Lee, one of the greatest spokesmen of the minorities in the US, gave a strong message that invited the audience to always "be on the right side of the story". At the end of his thanks, he invited actors Adam Driver and Laura Harrier to accompany him to present together the Mexico premiere of Blackkklansman, his most recent film.

In the same ceremony actor Adam Driver received the Outstanding Work in Cinema recognition from the hands of the legendary director Terry Gilliam, who, in a moving speech, described him as "…without a doubt the best actor of his generation".

Also during the gala award evening, prizes were given to several competing films and the winning projects of the Gabriel Figueroa Fund.

The winners of the Los Cabos International Film Festival 2018 were:

 OFFICIAL SELECTION

 Cinemex Award - Mexico First: Feral by Andrés Kaiser. The director of the film received thanks to Cinemex, $ 300,000 MXN in cash.

Special mention Los Cabos Competition: We the Animals by Jeremiah Zagar.

Los Cabos Competition Award: Canadian film Genèse by Philippe Lesage. The producers of the film received a prize of $ 300,000 MXN in cash.

Cinemex Audience Award: Pájaros de Verano, Colombia-Mexico co-production, co-directed by Cristina Gallego and Ciro Guerra. By public vote from audiences in Los Cabos this film received $ 300,000 MXN in cash.

FIPRESCI Award - Mexico First: Feral by Andrés Kaiser. Three members of the International Federation of the Cinematographic Press awarded this prize, whose objective is to promote Mexican films worldwide.

Trailer Art Kingdom Award: Feral by Andrés Kaiser. Art Kingdom Showbiz Agency awarded a prize worth $ 14,000 USD for the realization of a film trailer.

During the closing gala, Blackkklansman directed by Spike Lee was screened. In the movie, set in the 1970’s, Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) the first African-American detective in the Colorado Springs Police, contacts the representatives of the local Ku Klux Klan by phone, posing as a white supremacist but as he can’t attend meetings convened by the Klan, he convinces his Jewish colleague Flip (Adam Driver) to impersonate him.

Spike Lee Press Conference

American legendary filmmaker Spike Lee offered a press conference to talk about his latest film "BlacKkKlansman" a film that deals with the issue of racism, with touches of comedy, that was experienced (with greater force) in the festivals bordering country.

The film story based on the book "Black Klansman" by author Ron Stallworth who is a retired Afro-American policeman who infiltrated the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan in Colorado Springs in the late 1970’s, being the first African-American police officer in that state .

The film stars Laura Harrier, John David Washington and Adam Driver, who was also honored in this edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival.

Driver also told us about the great role played by film festivals like this one, now at the beginning of his career.

American actor Adam Driver offered a press conference to talk about his latest film "The Man Who Killed Don Quixote" directed by the also honored in this edition of Los Cabos International Film Festival, Terry Gilliam and how it was to work with this multi-talented director. 

During the talk Driver also told about the transition of the armed forces to the world of cinema and the similarities that both share, as well as the differences between the two.

The Seventh Los Cabos International Film Festival begins

With the traditional reception of celebrities and special guests on the red carpet of the Cabo San Lucas Cultural Pavilion, the Seventh Edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival kicked off attractively.

Between November 7th and 11th, more than 40 films will be exhibited, of which two will be world premieres: "A 3 Minute Hug" ("Un abrazo de 3 minutos ") and "Storks" “Cigüeñas”); 17 internationals among which stand out: "The Man who killed Don Quixote by Terry Gilliam (honored at the opening ceremony ) and" Blackkklansman "or" Infiltrated in the Kkklan "by Spike Lee (who will receive tribute at the closing ceremony"), as well as; 15 Mexican national films.

Unlike the festivals held elsewhere in Mexico, Los Cabos brings together actors, producers, directors and executives of the film industry, strengthening the cultural and commercial ties, of the three countries of North America: Mexic , United States and Canada.

Among the personalities that paraded on the Red Carpet we saw Linda Cruz and Julio Bracho (opening ceremony hosts), actress Stephanie Cayo and Mexican actor Darío Yazbek, amongst others.

During the opening ceremony in charge of giving the welcome speeches were Alfonso Pasquel, President of Art and Culture of Los Cabos, A.C. followed by Carlos Mendoza Davis, Baja California Sur Governor and Los Cabos Mayor Armida Castro. The Executive Director and the Artistic Director for the Festival, Alejandra Paulín and Maru Garzón, respectively, also joined in the welcome.

During the ceremony, tribute was paid to two greats of the film industry:

Pierce Handling, Executive Director of the Toronto Film Festival who enjoys enormous prestige for his extraordinary and respected professional career in the industry.

And; Terry Gilliam, screenwriter, director, actor and comedian with a great career in the industry with films like "Twelve Monkeys", "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", "Brazil", "The Fisher King" amongst others, besides "The man who killed Don Quixote " that will premier during this Festival, after almost 30 years trying to finish it. Gilliam also received the “Whales Tail” sculpture in bronze designed by famous Cabo resident artist "El Nacho" in recognition of his work same that was delivered by outstanding writer and one of this year’s  festival jury members Juan Villoro.

After the ceremony protocol the film shown was “The Favourite” by Yorgos Lanthimos (“Langosta” “El sacrificio de un ciervo sagrado”) film that was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the Venice International Film Festival, staring Emma Stone, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman.

This film set in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries during the time of Anne, Queen of Great Britain first queen of England and last of the house of Stuart. A story of intrigue and political intrigue highlighting the excellent scenery, costumes and photography.

Gilliam premieres in Los Cabos "The man who killed Don Quixote

Gulliam 1

As part of the framework for the Los Cabos International Film Festival, director, screenwriter, actor and comedian Terry Gilliam made the Latin America premiere of his latest film: "The man who killed Don Quixote".

Work in which he invested almost 30 years of his life, inspired by the writings of Miguel de Cervantes that mixes action with comedy. However, during a talk held with writer Juan Villoro, Gilliam even talked about political issues. Everything from why he decided to renounce to his American nationality, to what he thinks of Donald Trump, were discussed.

He said there are ways to tell stories, regardless of the government or political ideologies that might want to avoid issues.

 Gilliam has directed films such as Brazil, Twelve Monkeys, and The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. In some of his films Hollywood stars appear such as Brad Pitt, Bruce Willis and Adam Driver.
