Wama & Boo: Fables of the Baja California Peninsula Book Launch in San José del Cabo

At the Tamarindos restaurant, surrounded by the natural splendor of the organic garden and the warm Cabo summer breeze, the book Wama & Boo: Fables of the Baja California Peninsula was launched this Tuesday. This work, written by Loïc Tenoux and illustrated by Ileana Pérez Monroy, celebrates the natural, cultural, and spiritual richness of the Baja California Peninsula through original and poetic fables.
During the event, attended by students from a local school, excerpts from the book were read aloud, and free copies were distributed as part of an initiative to raise ecological and cultural awareness among the new generations.
“The people I trust most for the proper development of our land are the children,” Tenoux said. “That’s why the message of this book had to come to them.”
The work, which blends fantastical elements with references to nature, indigenous cultures, and the rock art of San Francisco Canyon, was born from a moment of profound spiritual connection the author experienced near San Ignacio more than three decades ago. It was then that he began collecting stories, myths, and sensations of the desert and the sea, the seeds of what years later would crystallize into the universe of Wama & Boo.
The collaboration with artist Ileana Pérez Monroy, known for her visual work deeply rooted in Mexican mythology and fauna, gave rise to a book that, beyond children’s literature, seeks to be a generational and territorial bridge, anchored in a love for the peninsula.
“This book aims to unite and value the land we have,” said Tenoux. “I feel very fortunate, and I want to spend the rest of my life here.”
The Wama & Boo series is conceived as a long-term project: up to ten volumes are planned, each with a new adventure, born from the previous one, like branches sprouting from a common trunk. Although the first volume took almost five years to complete, the author is confident that subsequent volumes will flow more smoothly.
With this work, Wama & Boo is emerging as a significant contribution to the children’s imagination in the region, while also serving as a pedagogical and ecologically sensitive tool for children, parents, and teachers.
