Pacific Blue Forum Turns Los Cabos into a Leader in Marine Conservation on World Oceans Day

The second edition of the Pacific Blue Forum, held within the framework of World Oceans Day and promoted by the United Nations (UN), concluded with a hopeful and multidisciplinary message. The event, held from June 5 to 9 at the El Ganzo Hotel in San José del Cabo, reaffirmed Baja California Sur’s commitment to the conservation of marine ecosystems.

Organized by Planet Ocean, under the direction of its founder Ana Ortiz, the forum was supported by organizations such as La Playa Community Center, Fundación Pablo, Kundavi, Puerto Los Cabos, Fiturca, and the El Ganzo Hotel itself. Ana Ortiz emphasized that the central objective is to “position Los Cabos as an epicenter of science and technology for ocean conservation.”

Community, Science, and Art: An Alliance for the Ocean

The forum brought together scientists, artists, fishermen, environmentalists, children, and community members, with an agenda that included presentations on technological innovation, environmental monitoring, education, and art as a tool for ecological awareness.

Community participation was key. Fishermen from the La Playa community and their families offered a culinary showcase that highlighted the sustainable use of marine species as the foundation of the local economy. Additionally, the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS), through its Marine Biology Program, reinforced the call for citizen co-responsibility in protecting the oceans.

“Society must actively participate. Not everything depends on the government. These forums are spaces where we can generate real and comprehensive solutions,” said Carlos Armando Sánchez Ortiz, a researcher at UABCS.

One of the most powerful themes of the event was environmental education aimed at children. Art workshops, beach cleanup campaigns, and recreational activities promoted by La Playa Community Center, the Pablo Foundation, and Hotel El Ganzo reinforced the message that ocean awareness must be cultivated from childhood.

Closing with a Documentary Film

The forum concluded on Monday, June 9, with a free documentary film night on the terrace of Hotel El Ganzo, where films exploring the crisis and the beauty of the oceans were screened. The event ran from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

A Model to Replicate

After two editions, the Blue Pacific Forum has established itself as a platform for science, community, and creativity in support of the ocean. With growing partnerships and strengthening projects, Los Cabos is emerging as a global benchmark for marine innovation and conservation.

“We want to transform our relationship with the sea. This is just one more wave, but it’s a wave that won’t stop,” concluded Ana Ortiz.
