Under the starry Pacific sky and surrounded by a dedicated crowd, Mexican Alex Hernández enjoyed an unforgettable night this Monday at the 2025 Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo, securing the most important victory of his career against Japanese Taro Daniel by a score of 3-6, 7-5, 6-4, in an epic duel that closed out the day of the ATP 250 tournament in Los Cabos.

The Acapulco native, currently ranked No. 493 in the PIF ATP rankings, achieved a historic comeback in two hours and 28 minutes, unleashing euphoria in the stands of the Mextenis Stadium, where hundreds of his compatriots cheered him on until well into the early hours. “Thank you to the crowd for pushing me to stay in the match and making me fight until the end,” said a visibly emotional Hernández, who found in the fans’ energy the spark he needed to turn around an uphill match, especially after trailing 2-5 in the second set.

The Mexican revealed an inspiring source of motivation: the recent Roland Garros final, where Carlos Alcaraz staged a memorable comeback against Jannik Sinner. “I was motivated by the final. Alcaraz fought like crazy, and I told myself: this isn’t over until the end,” he confessed.

This isn’t the first time Hernández has shined on this court. His only previous victory on the ATP Tour also came in Los Cabos, three years ago. Today, however, he feels different. More mature, more focused, and with a firm desire to continue growing.

The reward for his efforts will be a high-caliber second-round match against the tournament’s top seed, Russian Andrey Rublev, currently in the top ten. “It’s going to be awesome. It’s not every day you play a player with that quality,” he enthused. The matchup reminds him of his match against Felix Auger-Aliassime in 2022, when he managed to steal a set from the then-world No. 9.

“I’m very grateful to be back and on this court. To the Los Cabos organization for giving me the opportunity, and to my team, who has been behind me this whole time,” the 25-year-old added.

For Hernández, the key is clear: “Keep getting up every day and fighting. You have to keep going, don’t give up, it’s like everything in life.”

The day also brought good news for other competitors. Argentine Juan Pablo Ficovich advanced comfortably after defeating Russian Alibek Kachmazov 6-3, 6-2. Meanwhile, Americans Emilio Nava and Aleksandar Kovacevic also advanced to the second round, defeating Aleksandar Vukic (7-6(4), 6-3) and Lebanese Hady Habib (6-1, 3-6, 6-3), respectively.

The 2025 Mifel Tennis Open by Telcel Oppo continues to establish itself as one of the most exciting stages of the tennis summer, and for Alex Hernández, this tournament is already an essential part of his personal history.
