Los Cabos Reaffirms Its Leadership in Responsible Tourism on World Tourism Day

Dia Mundial del Turismo

On World Tourism Day, whose theme this year is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation,” Los Cabos reaffirms its commitment to a responsible tourism model that benefits visitors, the local community, and the natural environment.

Since 2019, the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (FITURCA) has developed 13 responsible tourism guides, making it one of the few destinations in Mexico with this type of comprehensive management tool. These guides have been developed with the participation of stakeholders in the tourism ecosystem and local communities, and cover key segments such as:

  • Travel Agents (2019)
  • Groups and Conventions (2019)
  • Wellness (2020)
  • Luxury Tourism (2021)
  • Responsible Tourism in Cabo Pulmo (2022)
  • Sustainable Events (2022)
  • Gastronomy (2022)
  • Spanish Market (2023)
  • Beaches (2023)
  • Rural Tourism (2024)
  • German Market (2024)
  • Diving and Marine Wildlife (2025)
  • Birdwatching (2025)

These guides offer strategies to diversify activities, reduce environmental impacts, and strengthen the long-term competitiveness of Los Cabos as a world-class destination.

Success Stories in Sustainability: Cabo Pulmo

The Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005 and a RAMSAR site since 2008, is considered a global success story in ecosystem regeneration and community development. Its 20,000-year-old coral reef is home to more than 800 marine species, including five endangered turtle species.

FITURCA published the “Responsible Tourist Guide to Cabo Pulmo,” which promotes practices such as proper waste management, local consumption, and respect for community culture.

Meetings Tourism with a Sustainable Vision

The Sustainable Events Guide, focused on the MICE industry, offers guidelines for integrating sustainability criteria into all stages of an event, from planning to post-event, encouraging local consumption and working with responsible suppliers.

Boosting the Local Economy

The guides also promote the strengthening of the community economy, highlighting traditional trades from rural regions such as Miraflores and Santiago, where practices such as saddlery, palm weaving, carpentry, and the artisanal production of honey and regional sweets are preserved.

Official Statement

Rodrigo Esponda Cascajares, Director General of FITURCA, stated:

“Through these guides, Los Cabos has established itself as a benchmark for responsible tourism in Mexico, thanks to its initiatives and tangible achievements in environmental preservation, cultural enrichment, and community well-being. We are actively working to ensure that each visit leaves a positive mark, contributing to the health of ecosystems and the flourishing of our communities.”

Esponda also highlighted that the guides are part of local efforts promoting UN Tourism’s One Planet initiative, based on six pillars: public health, social inclusion, biodiversity conservation, climate action, the circular economy, and governance with strategic alliances.

“The ultimate goal is not to seek less harmful tourism, but one that helps us leave the terrestrial and marine ecosystem in better condition than we found it; a co-responsible tourism for the present and future of Los Cabos.”
