Bisbee’s Black & Blue Officially Kicks Off in Los Cabos: Solidifying the Destination as the World Capital of Sport Fishing
With an impressive turnout of international competitors and a multi-million-dollar prize purse, another edition of the iconic Bisbee’s Black & Blue sport fishing tournament has begun—an event that reaffirms the standing of this region in Baja California Sur on the global stage.
Roberto Pantoja Castro, Mayor of the municipality of Comondú, highlighted the significance of including the region in the sport fishing circuit as a way to showcase its natural resources:
“San Lucas is the world capital for sport fishing tournament tourism… We have been fortunate enough to be included in this tournament—in this series—allowing an event to be hosted here in the municipality [of Comondú]. It gives us the chance to highlight our natural beauty and, above all, an area that is exceptionally rich for sport fishing.”
Meanwhile, Martín Inzunza Tamayo, Operations Director of the Mixed Fund for the Protection of Marine Resources (FONMAR), emphasized the scale and international reach of the competition:
“It is the most significant tournament on an international level… The prize purse—7.5 million dollars, or over 120 million pesos—speaks to the confidence placed in this event. There are 174 teams and 1,276 anglers from the United States, Canada, and Mexico, as well as participants from Asia and Europe. We are thrilled that Los Cabos remains the premier global stage for this sport.”
Boosting Tourism and Generating Significant Economic Impact
Beyond the sporting competition itself, the arrival of hundreds of participants and guests serves as a key driver for economic activity throughout the state. Clicerio Mercado Hernández, General Director of the Bisbee’s Tournaments, emphasized how this event revitalizes key sectors such as hospitality and dining:
“For many years, the Bisbee’s has marked the beginning of the high season. This means that people are filling hotel rooms—there are guests staying in hotels, and people are eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner.”
Mercado Hernández also highlighted the economic impact this event generates for local families and businesses:
“We once commissioned a socioeconomic study from Texas A&M University. It estimated that over these two weeks—the week of the Los Cabos Offshore and this week, featuring the Bisbee’s Black & Blue—the event contributes $50 million to the local economy. That is what matters.”
With the start of the fishing days, Los Cabos and Baja California Sur reaffirm their logistical capacity to host world-class tournaments, bringing together marine wealth, sport, and regional economic development.
