Cabo news & updates: January 2017
Los Cabos will kick off the new year with one of the most wonderful natural spectacles -- whale watching season. Along with enjoying Baja California Sur’s unique landscapes and captivating sunsets, travelers can take advantage of San José del Cabo’s annual Art Walk.
Southwest en route to Los Cabos will have two daily flights, no matter the season, according to the airline. The company expects to carry more than 700 passengers a day with these five flights, with a capacity of 143 travelers per flight (plus five crew members), and is expected to have high occupancy. Overall, Southwest reported an occupancy of 82 to 85 percent from the United States to Mexico and up to 90 percent from Mexico to the United States.
TripAdvisor deemed San José del Cabo number 1 in its top 10 destinations to visit for 2017. According to TripAdvisor’s Traveler's Choice survey, the destination is on the cusp of Top International Destinations on the Rise, above destinations such as Brazil and Hawaii. TripAdvisor encourages visitors to spend time at Palmilla beach, swim with dolphins, visit the church of San José del Cabo and take a stroll through San José del Cabo’s Gallery District.
To end the year successfully, the Sabor a CaboInternational Gastronomy Festival (known as Sabor a Cabo) was held on December 10 in the Sculpture Garden of Puerto Los Cabos with a performance from musical group Maná and a large number of attendees, including booths for 60 restaurants, chefs and other proprietors. The funds raised by the National Chamber of the Restaurant Industry will benefit local institutions such as firefighters and the Red Cross. At the festival, a combination of culinary heritage blended with the talents of prestigious chefs from around the country and the world to make Sabor a Cabo the most important culinary event of the year in Los Cabos.
In addition, Los Cabos has seen a great deal of growth the past two years as a result of the negotiation and bilateral agreement between Mexico and the United States. The first Southwest flight from Los Angeles touched down in Los Cabos on December 5 and on December 6 the first Delta flight arrived from Los Angeles as well. This is a great opportunity for Los Cabos to continue bringing in tourists. The previous restriction that only allowed two national airlines to come in from LAX to SJD was eliminated due to LA’s demand. This is what ultimately influenced the decision to incorporate Delta and Southwest to this new frequency.

DID YOU KNOW...
Huerta Los Tamarindos was opened around 2002 when Enrique Silva bought the land that was once a sugarcane plantation. The top area was once the house of the Castro family, one of the oldest families in San Jose, where brown sugar was manufactured. Over the years, Enrique has transformed the grounds into an organic garden of 16 hectares. More than 100 different types of vegetables and fruits are grown on the farm including tomatoes, basil, squash, eggplant, lettuce, papaya, mango, guava and herbs. There are also bees who produce honey. Five years ago, Enrique opened the restaurant La Huerta with a farm-to-table menu based on organic vegetables grown on-site. Before that, Enrique started offering cooking classes, which consist of a tour of a farm, gathering of ingredients and then Enrique or a local chef provide a cooking lesson and stay to enjoy the dishes prepared by the guests along with an afternoon in La Huerta. Among the most celebrated dishes are the tomato soup, salad, grilled fish and sweet pumpkin dessert; with most ingredients harvested directly in the on-site gardens.
Huerta Los Tamarindos has a restaurant and terrace area for 80 guests and a garden area that can seat up to 200. For more information, please visit: http://www.huertalostamarindos.com/index.html

THE OFFICE
In the 1970s, the first palapa on Medano Beach in Cabo San Lucas was built. The palapa, with its small kitchen and bar, catered to the needs of the locals and the few tourists that arrived by offering simple foods like ceviche, fried fish, burritos, hamburgers and margaritas, which have always been in high demand in the region.
A local character, an old gringo as told by the writer Carlos Fuentes, rented surf equipment while entertaining clients and friends in this palapa, and he and others called it the "The Office." Soon after, he made a blue sign with yellow letters officially identifying the place as an office -- the office on the beach. Since then, it has become a well-known restaurant in Los Cabos and currently offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and service for groups.
