Carlos Mendoza Davis, at the FITUR 2020 Forum
During the 40th Edition of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, Spain, a Forum took place named Sustainable Tourism as Generator of Quality Employment, where Baja California Sur Governor, Carlos Mendoza Davis was given a place center sage.
This event was Organized by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) headed by former Federal Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara 2010 -2012, also present was Spanish Airline Director of Iberia, Guillermo González Vallina and Juan Jesús García, Director of Industrial Affairs for Amadeus System of the European Union,
For his first intervention jobs and less poverty.
Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: “… we have been for the last 5 years the state that’s grown the most, in double digits and in repeated years, and we are consistently among the 3 states that are mostly employment-generating. Now, employment alone, and we realized later, it does not generate well-being, especially where it’s most needed, what did we realize? it happened that there was a bulk of the population that was in circumstances and situations of poverty ... . Because the tourism industry, if not well oriented, generates 2 gaps and 2 different realities within the same population, the glamor that tourists live, and the people who serve the tourist in that glamorous practice… ”
He also spoke of agreements achieved with Private Initiative:
Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: “… and what did we agree on? I am going to train the people that you are going to require, with the elements that you are going to request, we swim that you are going to commit, once they graduate, to hire them, we have hired 40 thousand people in Baja California Sur, 40 thousand people of which 25 thousand stopped being in poverty, today we are the second state with less poverty in the country… ”
To Gloria Guevara's question about how these actions were being quantified, the governor said:
Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: "... the clearest measurement is perhaps the one I mentioned, poverty has been reduced very importantly and I can tell you by name and surname which person was in poverty, and now has a job ..."
Regarding the issue of how to stimulate the economy, the governor referred to the conversations and commitment that hotels and restaurants, instead of providing inputs from abroad, would look for products that can be produced locally with the necessary quality.
Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: “… today we sell 250 products made in Baja California Sur to the tourism industry, and our economy is growing and the reputation of the industry is improving, because on the one hand you give people jobs, You have it happy, you change your life, and on the other hand, indirectly, you are generating growth in other sectors that also recognize that thanks to the purchasing power of tourism purchase, because also farmers, ranchers, fishermen; we sell products as simple as chips of fried corn tortillas, even dairy cheeses, yogurts and various things along the way… ”
