Miguel Torruco, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico: “Precisely in Baja California Sur, very soon I will be with the Governor to give the pleasant news of a great event of international stature that remains year after year to serve as an attraction and promotion at a very good level, we have continued working when at the beginning we cut budgets and subsidies, we were highly criticized but formula one continues until the 24th, the golf and tennis open continue, a series of events that previously the Mexican State financed follow, so the Mexican State is for facilitate and the private sector to invest and take profits”

Regarding the budget of this secretariat, the secretary reported that Mexico closed 2018 in 40th place in per capita spending that only benefited six tourist destinations (including Los Cabos) with 92.5% of international tourism

Miguel Torruco Secretary of Tourism of Mexico: “A lot of money has been invested in Los Cabos for the benefit of the local population, but there was also excessive dependence, 69% from 2 countries, the United States and Canada, so if there was a hurricane, 1 of the 6 would be affected. tourism fell, if there was a problem, a restriction with 1 of the 2 countries, tourism fell, then tourism must be a tool for social reconciliation and, above all, focus efforts to benefit the local population”

Regarding the ravages of the pandemic in tourism, Miguel Torruco mentioned that the drop in this sector worldwide was from 73 to 84 percent, but Mexico managed to have a lesser impact due to the measures implemented:

Miguel Torruco, Secretary of Tourism of Mexico: “the pandemic was a disgrace, there was a loss of jobs, there was a fall, but that is to say, the fall worldwide was 73%, the fall of those that compete with Mexico of the 10 large tourism companies, even 82 fell to 84%, in Mexico for the non-restriction of international flights and for the bio-sanitary protocols that we were the first country to implement, with the support of the private sector, which is essential, and the Ministry of Health and Tourism, also supported us that helped us to fall only 46%”

Also, he mentioned the transformation experienced by the tourist profile, especially the European, and its adaptation to the new protocols implemented worldwide:

Miguel Torruco Secretary of Tourism of Mexico: "The severe restrictions that occurred here in Europe, resulted in changing the profile of the tourist, tourism with high purchasing power stopped coming to Europe, although it will return, but it was not even visiting our country, did not visit our country Mexico or especially Los Cabos, despite the 23 offices of the council, and despite the 54 billion pesos of the budget from 2012 to 18, that's why we were in 40th place in spending per capita, because We managed the middle hospitalization segment, but what happened? By changing the profile of the tourist, they now opted for an average flight of 4 hours and a half in that radius of action, our country benefits above all, the two Baja Californias, also Nuevo Vallarta, also part of the North of Mexico, including also the part of the South Miami”
