Quality rather than quantity is the premise of Los Cabos' strategy.
“Where our strategy is going is to position Los Cabos for the quality of the product and the income that visitors generate, beyond the number of tourists. That is, our game is not to increase the number of visitors, but to improve the quality of the experience and the spill,” said Rodrigo Esponda.
He also announced that, within the framework of the TianguisTurístico 2024, Los Cabos obtained 3 recognitions in the “Choice Awards Best of the Best”, from Tripadvisor, an online travel platform that works with reviews and experiences shared by travelers. The distinctions went to Medano, Chileno and Cabo San Lucas, which are located within the top 10 of Tripadvisor's “Best of the best beaches.”
Los Cabos-style sustainability
The director of Fiturca referred to two success stories in terms of sustainability in Los Cabos: Cabo Pulmo, “where regeneration has occurred through tourism,” and the Sierra de las Cacachilas, where work is being done with the community of El Triunfoto regenerate the ecosystem. “It would be difficult to find two such good examples in the world where tourism is playing a role in regeneration based on a sustainability approach,” he highlighted.
The focus on sustainability is accompanied by changes in the profile of travelers. For example, millennial tourists, “a significant force in size and penetration in the industry in general in the world,” who are much more aware of the importance of sustainability and align their values in that sense, so the destination must be in tune with this audience.
“If they are against the consumption of plastic water bottles, what they are looking for is to go to a destination that what it does is aligned with their values regarding the community, the environment and gastronomy. This is shared with authorities and service providers so that they can analyze how they should modify their products or services in accordance with these trends,” explained Esponda.
The Secretary of Tourism of Baja California Sur, Maribel Collins, who also participated in the meeting with the media within the framework of the TianguisTurístico 2024, referred to the mass tourism containment program that was implemented on Balandra beach, which was named as the most beautiful in Mexico, as a way to preserve the ecosystem.
As a result of the appointment, she recalled, “too many people began to arrive and what was done was to take actions to see the cargo capacity and manage it by blocks. There are certain measures and rules to enter the beach. This has been understood and is important to preserve a beach,” highlighted the state official.
The president-advisor of the Board of Directors of the Los Cabos Hotel Association, Mauricio Salicrup, addressed another success story in terms of sustainable tourism in the region: Comprehensive Tourism Developments, which are tourism investment projects that trigger the development of infrastructure. public for the benefit of local communities and tourism service providers.
“Whoever participates in a Comprehensive Tourism Development has to promote social infrastructure works, either towards Cabo San Lucas or towards San José del Cabo”, and in coordination with the state and municipal authorities, the essential needs of each community are defined to design the works and renew the environment,” he explained.
Rodrigo Esponda recalled that since before the Covid-19 pandemic in Los Cabos, the use of plastic bags was prohibited, which had a positive impact on the ecosystems of the region. “When we clean the bay, especially after the rainy season, we no longer find plastic bags. If the use of these bags were allowed, we would find them and they would have a harmful result on the biodiversity of the sea,” he remarked.
In addition, Los Cabos also seeks to create an awareness of sustainability in tourists. “We have a responsible traveler's guide, that is, if the traveler wants to be more responsible on their trip, we tell them what they can do, we generate a specific guide with specific recommendations so that the traveler understands how they can be more sustainable.”
For their part, hotels and tourism service providers share sustainability strategies among themselves to ingrain a sustainable culture in the destination. It is a multiplier effect of good practices in Los Cabos. Sustainable events are also held and there are beach guides. “We are looking for a greater contribution to sustainability in the region, we use traveler feedback,” said Esponda.
