Urban Cleaning: A Crucial Challenge for Tourism in Los Cabos
In a recent interview, EspondaCascajaresaddressed these concerns, which have been reiterated by the hotel sector and local business associations. "Exit surveys indicate that, although most aspects of a stay in Los Cabos are well received, street cleanliness is a recurring negative point," he explained. These surveys are key instruments that FITURCA uses to evaluate several indicators critical to the visitor experience, including mobility, security, and the quality of infrastructure such as the Marina, roads, and airport. The challenge of urban cleanliness has intensified since the Fonatur Comprehensively Planned Center (CIP) in Los Cabos formally stopped operating in December 2023. This center was responsible for the administration and maintenance of some of the most important areas of the destination , and its closure has left a void that the Government of Baja California Sur is still trying to fill. Residents, business owners and local authorities have noted a decrease in cleaning and watering green areas, which has contributed to a negative perception among some tourists. Urban image and cleanliness are crucial factors that influence tourists' decision to return or recommend a destination. "We cannot take for granted that tourists will continue to come if we do not improve in these aspects," EspondaCascajares stressed. Sustainability and the care of cities are increasingly important for travelers, who seek destinations that not only offer natural beauty and high-quality services, but also demonstrate a commitment to the preservation of the environment and the quality of urban life.
