SANTIAGO DE LA FUENTE WINS EXEMPTION TO PLAY THE WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY CHAMPIONSHIP

WORLD WIDE TECHNOLOGY CHAMPIONSHIP

The Jalisco native won the Mexican Qualifier presented by National Car Rental and will make his debut in the pioneering PGA TOUR tournament in Latin America, from November 7 to 10

LOS CABOS, BAJA CALIFORNIA SUR (October 7, 2024) – Santiago De La Fuente from Jalisco was crowned in the Mexican Qualifier presented by National Car Rental and obtained an exemption to compete in the World Wide Technology Championship, the PGA TOUR tournament with the greatest tradition and history in Mexico and Latin America, which will take place from November 7 to 10, 2024 at the El Cardonal Golf Course in Diamante Cabo San Lucas.

The Mexican signed a card of 11-under-par (97 strokes) in this qualifying event, which was held in 27 holes with a strokeplay format, exclusively for Mexican golfers, on the host course of the event. “Many thanks to Diamante and the sponsors for making this tournament possible, they open the doors for us to be able to play a Tour tournament that is a unique opportunity for us Mexicans,” said the 22-year-old Mexican, after the celebrations at El Cardonal.

De La Fuente will participate for the first time in the World Wide Technology Championship. In January of this year, the Mexican won the Latin American Amateur Championship (LAAC), which allowed him to play three of the four Majors of the season: the Masters at Augusta National, the U.S. Open and The Open Championship.

“Things went very well today and golf behaved very well,” added the native of Ocotlán, former representative of the University of Houston and who turned professional just three months ago. During the first 18 holes of this Monday morning, De La Fuente signed a card of 64 strokes (-8) and took a lead of five strokes over Hidalgo native José Cristóbal Islas and Puebla native Isidro Benítez (-3). The native of Jalisco made a perfect walk of eight birdies to calmly contest the last nine flags of the Mexican Qualifier presented by National Car Rental.

Santiago improved his final score with another three birdies during the afternoon, to go without errors during the 27 holes played this Monday at the El Cardonal Golf Course in Diamante Cabo San Lucas, for a total of -11.

Players who finished between second and seventeenth qualified for the Mexico Match Play, which will take place tomorrow, Tuesday, October 8 and Wednesday, October 9, 2024, to compete for another spot in the 2024 World Wide Technology Championship field. Those golfers are: Alejandro Madariaga, José Cristóbal Islas, Isidro Benítez, Enrique José Karga (a), Fernando Arzate, Mauricio Figueroa, Roberto Rodríguez Cacho, Gilberto Peña, José de Jesús “El Camarón” Rodríguez, Aarón Terrazas, Óscar Fraustro, Ricardo Soto, Bernardo Terán, Alberto Rutiz Nava, Eloy Vigil Escalera and Yahel Chahín
