Los Cabos, one destination, many Cabos: the evolution of a unique territory
Los Cabos is a destination where stories and landscapes converge, recounting centuries of transformation. From the first explorers to the current dynamism, this region stands out for its cultural and natural wealth, each place contributing a unique chapter to its narrative.
The beginning of this story dates back to November 14, 1535, when the iconic Arch of Cabo San Lucas was named Cabo California or Punta California. Over time, it was renamed Cabo San Lucas, a site that combines adventure and mystery, where pirates used to stalk the sea routes and sailors sought refuge in its quiet bays.
San José del Cabo, on the other hand, was named in honor of Don José de la Puente y Peña, Marquis of Villapuente de la Peña, who supported the evangelization of the region, through the Pious Fund of the Californias. This place preserves the essence of a traditional Mexican town, with cobblestone streets, art galleries and a colonial atmosphere that invites you to tour its historic center and enjoy its renowned gastronomic offering.
Throughout history, several points in the region have been named "Cabo." Cabo Falso, the southernmost point of the peninsula, is home to a lighthouse that Porfirio Díaz inaugurated on May 5, 1905, as a symbol of sovereignty after the American invasion of previous years. This lighthouse, still standing, safeguards stories of sailors and times gone by.
In the area known locally as "La Costa" and officially as Cabo del Este, there are almost virgin beaches, perfect for those seeking a deep connection with nature. Cabins and glamping options offer an authentic experience, away from the tourist movement, ideal for surfers and explorers who want to discover the more serene side of Los Cabos.
On the other hand, Cabo Pulmo is a marine refuge that houses one of the oldest and most diverse coral reefs in the world. This sanctuary, called “the aquarium of the world” by Jacques Cousteau, is a paradise for divers and an example of conservation and respect for nature.
On April 8, 1980, the municipality of Los Cabos was formally established, uniting all these stories and territories under a single name. Despite their common name, each place retains its own identity: Cabo San Lucas, with its vibrant nightlife and luxurious resorts; San José del Cabo, with its calm artistic and cultural atmosphere; Cabo Pulmo, with its unparalleled marine biodiversity, and Cabo del Este, with its untamed nature.
Los Cabos invites you to explore its many facets, to discover the diversity that inhabits each of its corners. A territory where history, culture and nature intertwine, offering unforgettable experiences for those who venture to discover this extraordinary destination.
