World Wide Technology Championship 2024 kicks off and promises a great show for its attendees
At a press conference held on Monday afternoon at the Diamante development, home of the event, the organizers and prominent figures of the World Wide Technology Championship 2024 Golf Tournament, led by Joe Mazzeo, director of the event, met to detail the aspects that make this event much more than a sports competition. The event, which is held at the prestigious El Cardonal golf course in Diamante, unites the talent of the PGA TOUR, the hospitality of Los Cabos and a strong commitment to the community.
Matt Horner, Executive Vice President of World Wide Technology (WWT), highlighted the relevance of the week not only as a golf show, but as a meeting point for more than 650 clients, partners and employees. “It is an opportunity to enjoy, learn and innovate. We have organized leadership sessions and multiple socializing activities,” said Horner, emphasizing WWT's role in promoting a comprehensive experience that transcends sport.
Michael Abbott, Vice President of Operations for Diamante Cabo San Lucas, highlighted the partnership with WWT, Wasserman and the PGA TOUR, assuring that this tournament is positioned as one of the best on the tour. “The hospitality and the course conditions make this event unique. In addition, it is a pleasure to support initiatives such as the First Tee program, which encourages children in Mexico to play golf,” said Abbott.
The current defending champion, Erik Van Rooyen, shared his impressions of the course, highlighting the improvements and challenging conditions he will face, especially with the winds expected for the first days of the tournament. Van Rooyen, who presents himself as an ambassador for WWT, showed a mix of humility and ambition when speaking about his return: “It is a privilege to return and defend my title. I have worked on improving my short game, especially chipping around the green, which has been my weak point. This course demands precision and creativity,” he said.
Beyond golf, the organizers highlighted the importance of philanthropic initiatives. Horner stressed WWT’s responsibility to give back to the communities in which it operates: “This week we had the opportunity to share with First Tee students, encouraging them to love the sport. Our mission goes beyond business; we want to leave a positive and lasting impact on the community.”
Ken Tackett, PGA TOUR competition referee, praised the course conditions and its ability to test the best players in the world. “The expected wind is a decisive factor that will make this tournament a real challenge,” said Tackett, adding that the team is prepared to adjust the conditions and ensure fair and exciting competition.
The tournament not only represents a sporting challenge, but also an engine of growth for the community of Los Cabos. Van Rooyen reflected on the legacy he hopes this event will leave: “If we can motivate young people to play and give them opportunities like the ones I had, it will be an invaluable legacy,” he said. With a scholarship in memory of his friend Jon, the golfer also showed the human and caring side that characterizes this tournament. The event promises to be a milestone for Los Cabos, combining the excitement of golf, business innovation and a genuine commitment to the well-being of the community.
