Nico Echavarría co-leads World Wide Technology Championship after brilliant bogey-free round
Colombian Nico Echavarría had an exceptional day in the second round of the World Wide Technology Championship in Los Cabos, positioning himself as co-leader with American Max Greyserman. Echavarría achieved his best round on the PGA TOUR with an impeccable 9-under par 63, being the only player to complete the first 36 holes without bogeys, which reflects his excellent performance and consistency at El Cardenal at Diamante.
Echavarría, who came into the tournament in high spirits after his recent victory at the ZOZO Championship in Japan on October 27, shared the lead with Greyserman, one of the players who had won by one stroke in that tournament. Greyserman achieved an 8-under par 64 in the second round, tying the score at -12 with Echavarría. Both were one shot behind Carson Young, who shot a record-breaking round of 11-under par 61, placing third with a total of -11.
The Colombian said that “it was a nice afternoon,” emphasizing that his streak of birdies and eagles began after saving par on the third hole, which gave him the impetus for a series of excellent shots on the following holes. After three initial pars, Echavarría made birdies on holes 4 and 5, and then an impressive eagle from the bunker on the par-5 6th hole. The series of good results continued with birdies on holes 7 and 8, closing the first half of the course with a solid lead.
“You have to take advantage of those moments that golf gives you, without thinking about how much you have or how much is left. It is about staying focused and letting things flow,” said Echavarría, who added two additional birdies on holes 15 and 18 to close his round without errors.
With the third round scheduled to begin this Saturday at 7:50 a.m. local time, Echavarría will seek to defend his position as leader, starting at 9:51 a.m. alongside Greyserman and Young. Saturday's round will mark an important challenge for the Colombian, who is the only Latin American in the competition after the cut set at 2-under par 142, which left out the other nine Latin American players in the tournament.
The World Wide Technology Championship is part of the FedExCup Fall, a key series in which the top 125 players who will secure their card for the full-field events in the 2025 PGA TOUR season will be defined.
