The fourth edition of the WWT Championship opens in Los Cabos, celebrating 20 years of the PGA Tour in Mexico

With an opening ceremony at the El Cardonal clubhouse in Diamante Cabo San Lucas, the fourth consecutive edition of the World Wide Technology Championship (WWT Championship) officially opened in this destination, an event that also commemorates two decades of the PGA Tour in Mexico.

The Grand Opening Ceremony took place on Tuesday afternoon, November 3. During the ceremony, defending champion Ben Griffin was honored for setting the tournament record in 2015 with a score of 259 (-29). The trophy now awaits the 120 golfers who will compete from November 5-8 on the 7,452-yard, par-72 course designed by Tiger Woods.

This tournament, which began in 2007 in Mayakoba (Riviera Maya) as the first official PGA Tour event held outside the United States and Canada, moved to Los Cabos in 2023. Since then, it has solidified the destination as a top-tier venue. Joe Mazzeo, the tournament director, highlighted the achievement: “No one, in their wildest dreams, could have imagined that we would still be here after 20 years.”

Over these two decades, the championship has awarded more than $118 million in prize money—the highest figure for any golf tournament in Latin American history—and has generated more than $4 million in charitable contributions. It has also boosted an estimated economic impact of hundreds of millions of dollars for the host communities.

The 2026 edition boasts a purse of $6 million ($1.08 million for the winner) and awards 500 FedExCup Fall points. Among the participants are Griffin himself, Ryan Gerard (one of the top-ranked players in the field), and several former champions. Mexico will be represented by Álvaro Ortiz, Alejandro Madariaga, and Jorge Villar.

In addition to the official competition, the week includes pro-ams, the Oasis Short-Am benefiting The First Tee of Diamante, and activities for amateur golfers, reinforcing the event’s connection to the development of junior golf and tourism in Los Cabos.

With the opening ceremony already completed, the World Wide Technology Championship is preparing to write a new chapter in its history on Mexican soil, solidifying its legacy as a pioneer and driving force behind professional golf in the country.
