Los Cabos Strengthens International Ties After FITUR and Welcomes the European Union Ambassador

Ana Gabriela Navarro

Los Cabos’ international projection strategy continues to take shape following the destination’s participation in the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid. This was explained by Ana Gabriela Navarro, the municipal director of Tourism, during an interview on the radio program “Los Cabos a la Carta,” where she detailed recent efforts focused on sister city agreements, European promotion, and the municipality’s strategic positioning.

Navarro recounted that, after her participation in FITUR, she made a quick trip to Banderas Bay to advance a tourism sister city agreement. “After FITUR, I made a quick trip to Banderas Bay… with the intention of establishing that direct connection… we are working so that we can sign that sister city agreement at the Tianguis Turístico,” she explained. She noted that both destinations share similarities as Pacific tourist hubs, which opens up opportunities for collaboration.

Meanwhile, a formal approach with Málaga, Spain, remains pending due to a train tragedy that brought grief to the European country. Navarro described the situation as “very regrettable” and recalled that they even had a scheduled agenda in that city. Despite this, she emphasized that they managed to establish initial institutional contact: “We were able to meet with the director of tourism for Málaga… with complete openness to creating this partnership between our two municipalities,” she stressed, highlighting the interest of Spanish authorities in the potential of Los Cabos.

One of the central points of the interview was the recent visit of the European Union Ambassador to Mexico, Francisco André, who conducted an exploratory tour of the destination. Navarro explained that the visit is part of an ongoing strategy for the European market: “More than anything, it’s to follow up on the efforts being made in the European market… this continuity makes perfect sense,” she affirmed.

During his stay, the diplomat visited some of the municipality’s main natural attractions, including whale watching. The director noted that the ambassador was particularly impressed by the organization of the activity. “He mentioned the organized way in which whale watching is being conducted… that protocols are being followed to ensure the experience works for both tourists and whales,” she noted.

Navarro revealed that the ambassador’s interest went beyond a courtesy visit. She explained that the diplomat was evaluating the destination as a possible venue for a high-level international meeting planned for 2037. “His intention was to come and do some scouting… he asked strategic questions about connectivity, metrics, and European flights,” she detailed. She added that he was presented with information on hotel infrastructure, operational capacities, and service standards.

The official emphasized that Los Cabos has the conditions to receive high-profile tourism. “We have hotels, trained staff, and activities that are definitely a strength,” she said, emphasizing that the destination’s safety and organization were key topics during the discussions. With these actions, the Municipal Tourism Directorate seeks to consolidate the international presence of Los Cabos, strengthen strategic alliances and expand its positioning in priority markets, especially in Europe, projecting the municipality as a competitive destination for high-level events and visitors.
