Mako Shark sighting in Los Cabos and attempts to protect it

Shark CNT 1

One of the most attractive and interesting shark species of the more than 360 existing, is the Mako Shark, which on average measures 2.70 meters although there are those up to almost 4.50 meters long.

They can live up to 36 years of age and are considered the fastest shark in the world moving at a speed of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

It is currently possible to have a close sighting under the sea with this species in certain places like Los Cabos, Baja California Sur.

Clara Calatayud, Marine Biologist. Mexico Blue Foundation:

“… New Zealand, the United States, Mexico and South Africa are visited due to the great interest that the Mako arouses as an emblematic species.”

Estrella Navarro, Marine Biologist and Environmentalist:

“The Mako Shark is getting to be known more and more in ecotourism. There are people who travel directly to places where Mako Shark observation takes place especially to see it, here in Los Cabos… It is a unique experience, magical, highly recommended and because we are not really shark prey, they do nothing to us. I have swum with them several times and it’s incredible ...”

Jacobo Brunetti, Cabo Shark Dive:

"Here in Cabo let's say 20-25 minutes, I’m talking about 2 nautical miles, between 2 and 3 nautical miles from shore ..."

To have an underwater close encounter with this shark, first, you have to be mainly calm and follow certain rules.

Estrella Navarro, Marine Biologist and Environmentalist:

"... Maintain keeping eye contact between you and your friends with the sharks and never, not with Mako Shark or with any other wild species, never behaving as prey, do not be scared, do not escape, don't swim quickly to the opposite side. These are basic safety rules when interacting with any wildlife ...”

Due to commercial fishing its population has declined 46.6%.

Estrella Navarro, Marine Biologist and Environmentalist:

"Mexico exports a lot of Mako Shark fin ... one of the main consumers in Asia, is China and well this global consumption of Mako Shark has led it to be in danger of extinction ..."

It has been shown that a live shark is worth more, than a dead shark.

Estrella Navarro, Marine Biologist and Environmentalist:

"... Not only is it leaving an income to Los Cabos and places where this activity is done directly by ecotourism ... tour operators also give the fisherman by buying other species that are much more sustainable "

Jacobo Brunetti, Cabo Shark Dive: “…local fishermen with us receive during high season, around 200 to 250 dollars a day, with bait we buy… currently they earn 400 pesos per kilo of shark fins and it doesn’t suit them at all because they spend a lot on gas and it’s much more dangerous… ”

From August 16 to 28, the UN Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna will take place in Geneva, Switzerland, where a vote proposed by Mexico and backed by 55 countries will take place to rule that Mako Sharks are an endangered species and thus limit its fishing.

Estrella Navarro, Marine Biologist and Environmentalist:

"... For a country to export this shark, it’s going to have to prove that its populations are healthy ..."

Clara Calatayud, Marine Biologist, and Mexico Blue Foundation:

"We need the benefits of CITES, sustainability, traceability and legal provenance on a global level."

Globally as a result of commercial fishing, it’s estimated that 100 million sharks die annually for their meat but mainly for their fins that have high value in the Asian markets.

More than 500 people related to the Meetings Tourism industry and from all regions of the country are expected to be in attendance:

"In the twenty-sixth national congress of the meetings industry, 500 congressmen will come plus special guests, in short, approximately 550 people who are going to discuss, that we are going to work on training, development, business, and most importantly public policies, we are going To work with the federal secretary of tourism, we will work with the tourism commission of the Chamber of Deputies and of course with the State through its Secretary of Economic Development, Tourism and Sustainability with Luis Humberto Araiza and of course with  Rodrigo Esponda and FITURCA "said Jaime Salazar Figueroa, President of the Mexican Council of the Meeting Industry.

He also mentioned that Los Cabos thanks to its hotel infrastructure, its Convention Center, among other aspects, it is ideal for the realization of such events:

"Los Cabos is an ideal destination for the meetings industry in terms of hotel infrastructure, transportation, services, gastronomy, etc., in order to receive congress, conventions, commercial exhibitions, including those of international standing.

The edition done to  the Los Cabos Convention Center already full after  long time of abandonment, now makes Los Cabos fabulous for commercial exhibitions of type B2C, B2B to receiving  world-class congresses, in short Los Cabos is now  ready to be the # 1 destination in the country for the meetings industry. "

Rodrigo Esponda head of FITURCA said that these kinds of events provide important projection for Los Cabos:

"This is the National Congress of the Industry of Meetings the most important event that we will have in the year for the quality of the assistants that attend, they are the main organizers nationwide, they’re the companies that manage congresses, conventions, expos and incentives at the national level and therefore this gives a projection to the destination of the facilities that we have, of the new hotel facilities, of the hospitality and quality that the destination  offers to receive this  kind  of programs in the future ".

It was announced that last year 310 thousand meetings were held in the country, including exhibitions, congresses, conventions and incentive trips, so it’s imperative to have an increasingly growing participation in that market.

Good occupation in BCS this summer: Luis H. Araiza, Secretary of Tourism in BCS

Luis Araiza CNT 1

In a recent conversation with Baja California Sur Secretary of Tourism, Economy and Sustainability Luis H. Araiza where he stated that occupation in the 25 thousand hotel rooms in the state is progressing at an excellent pace:

“… We are registering very good occupation especially in the southern part of the state that’s privileged by the US and Canadian markets.  On average in Loreto, La Paz and Los Cabos we are talking about figures close to 70%, which is a very good indicator and that the curve that was regularly lowering because it is not “in season” was more pronounced and right now we are benefiting as well by hosting more national tourists.  Loreto is at 63%, La Paz and Los Cabos are both above 70% occupancy ...”

He also noted that compared to last year we have a significant growth.

“I would say that with growth of just over 10% compared to last year and last year we received around three and a half million visitors just by air and cruise ships, we hope to exceed that figure by more than 10% this year.”

On the disappearance of the national Tourism Promotion Council and the impact that could have on tourism in this entity, he said:

“… the absence of the CPTM I believe it is going to have a disadvantage in the medium term especially for the country brand, however, being Baja California Sur a destination that depends to a large extent, on 70% of the northern market that are the United States and Canada, we will continue to attract them, we will continue to promote there, we are also diversifying the market with sports tourism, adventure tourism and with European tourism ..”

On the impact of tourism on the state economy, he stated:

“…the gross domestic product that is the wealth generated in a state, we are above 13%, well above the national framework, where the average is around 2%. This year the country is hardly going to reach that 2%, and we are well above the second place that is at 6 or 7%, so then we are with very good numbers... ”
