Carlos Mendoza Davis, at the FITUR 2020 Forum

During the 40th Edition of the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, Spain, a Forum took place named Sustainable Tourism as Generator of Quality Employment, where Baja California Sur Governor, Carlos Mendoza Davis was given a place center sage.

This event was Organized by the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC)   headed by former Federal  Tourism Secretary Gloria Guevara 2010 -2012, also present  was  Spanish Airline Director of Iberia, Guillermo González Vallina and Juan Jesús García, Director of Industrial Affairs for Amadeus System of the European Union,

For his first intervention jobs and less poverty.

Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: “… we have been for the last 5 years the state that’s grown the most, in double digits and in repeated years, and we are consistently among the 3 states that are mostly employment-generating. Now, employment alone, and we realized later, it does not generate well-being, especially where it’s most needed, what did we realize? it happened that there was a bulk of the population that was in circumstances and situations of poverty ... . Because the tourism industry, if not well oriented, generates 2 gaps and 2 different realities within the same population, the glamor that tourists live, and the people who serve the tourist in that glamorous practice… ”

He also spoke of agreements achieved with Private Initiative:

Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: “… and what did we agree on? I am going to train the people that you are going to require, with the elements that you are going to request, we swim that you are going to commit, once they graduate, to hire them, we have hired 40 thousand people in Baja California Sur, 40 thousand people of which 25 thousand stopped being in poverty, today we are the second state with less poverty in the country… ”

To Gloria Guevara's question about how these actions were being quantified, the governor said:

Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: "... the clearest measurement is perhaps the one I mentioned, poverty has been reduced very importantly and I can tell you by name and surname which person was in poverty, and now has a job ..."

Regarding the issue of how to stimulate the economy, the governor referred to the conversations and commitment that hotels and restaurants, instead of providing inputs from abroad, would look for products that can be produced locally with the necessary quality.

Carlos Mendoza Davis, Governor of BCS: “… today we sell 250 products made in Baja California Sur to the tourism industry, and our economy is growing and the reputation of the industry is improving, because on the one hand you give people jobs, You have it happy, you change your life, and on the other hand, indirectly, you are generating growth in other sectors that also recognize that thanks to the purchasing power of tourism purchase, because also farmers, ranchers, fishermen; we sell products as simple as chips of fried corn tortillas, even dairy cheeses, yogurts and various things along the way… ”

“…absolutely, our State’s main vocation, is tourism as well as, the know how to advance, for instance the supply chain issue  or  even training in order to bridge the gap where tourism , sometimes  is the same   generator of the deficiencies  in the social realm  ...

And in regards to the environmental issue, he said this:

Luis H. Araiza, Secretary of Tourism, Economy and Sustainability for B.C.S.”… Sustainability is in Vogue. Tourism can’t be distant to the matter so, due to the level of importance in our State for sustainability, it is totally immersed in this states tourist and economy agendas”

Alberto Peláez, Journalist: “…what we recently saw  happen with storm Gloria, it's over with, the Euro Delta is a disaster, it's a catastrophe;  but we all continue to consume plastics, and we’ll keep on doing whatever we feel like doing, so I mean,  things  will unfortunately go worse, if we don’t become self-aware.

As in years past, Mexico participation shined once again by showing the range of  splendid  destinations.

Miguel Torruco Marqués, Federal Secretary of Tourism: “For me, FITUR represents the Spanish-Language   most important fair… “

The secretary referred to tourism statistics for this first year of his administration.

Miguel Torruco Marqués, Federal Secretary of Tourism: “Well, as you know, we closed 2019 with 44,700,000 immersion tourists, which represents 8.5% more than the previous year and in terms of currency $ 24,800 million dollars, 10.2% more than the previous year; In Conclusion, the goal of building 22,000 new hotel rooms was met, as well as some very good news which we shared today.  Currently 287,500 million pesos from 2,755 different projects throughout the 32 states in the Republic have already laid the first stone and will generate 90,000 new hotel rooms during 2020, 21 and 22 ...”

Miguel Torruco Marqués, Federal Secretary of Tourism:  “The Mayan Train is the biggest bet, it will make all Mexicans very proud and above all, that it will include benefits to the local population of Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Campeche, Tabasco and Chiapas…”

Los Cabos promotion leader , Rodrigo Esponda, spoke to us about a few of the teams  achievements during this immense tourism fair, along with our business partners,  and the talks about a new flight direct from Europe.

Rodrigo Esponda, Director of the Tourist Trust of Los Cabos: “… obviously the English Court, with which we have a long-standing working relationship, with Logitravel, which is another of the largest companies with AVASA, which is a consortium of travel agencies, located in different areas of Spain ... we’re also are checking all aspects  in order to have another European  flight, now from Spain  direct to Los Cabos in the short term ... hopefully next year 2021 it can happen, so we had a meeting with the president of ABORIS consortium  a very large conglomerate that has bought several companies in Spain and together with them we’ve been reviewing the data .. ”

Also announced was the World Purchasing Congress organized by the World Tourism Organization scheduled for next October where else but in Los Cabos.

Rodrigo Esponda, Director of the Tourist Trust of Los Cabos:: “… it will be the first time the UN-WTO holds its congress in Mexico and will be attended by the Secretary General and many officials and it’s understood in the sense of purchases, not only of what can be generated from transactions, but from local purchases, that is, what this congress is looking to do is encourage the consumption of local products… ”

Finally, worth mentioning, is that prior to the tourism fair in Mérida, Los Cabos was reporting intense promotion activity in three, major US cities, carrying out promotion caravans directed to galvanize various segments of the hospitality industry in the neighboring country .

Humpback Whale Watching In Los Cabos

Whales CNT 1

Humpback Whale Watching In Los Cabos

It’s estimated that hundreds of gray and humpback whales, winter after winter, travel about 5,400 nautical miles from the cold waters of Alaska, to any of the three whale sanctuaries along the coast of Baja California Sur, to mate or to give birth to their calves.

Tourism service providers throughout the state, offer a variety of tours for both residents and visitors who wish to closely live this unique experience.

First to arrive are the humpback whales that can be seen from various tour boats or from land very close to the shoreline of Los Cabos.

Carol Pennal, from Indiana: “This is our 7th time whales watching. We definitely saw more breeching today than we have ever seen, so it’s been a very good trip ...”

The humpback whale is one of the most popular cetaceans, since its migratory routes are very close to the coast which allows thousands of people to observe them year after year.

Beatriz González, from State of Mexico: "Beautiful, it’s a beautiful and wonderful experience, it’s like nothing else and it’s just beautiful ..."

Alejandro Robles, State of Mexico: "Yes this is also my first time ... Fabulous, fabulous atmosphere and the activities, very good..."

This, which is the most impressive animal migration on the planet. It usually begins in the second part of December, ending in mid-march, offering a magnificent option to enjoy both this natural spectacle and other beautiful sights of Los Cabos.
