Los Cabos consolidates its position as the third most popular beach destination in Mexico, surpassing Cancun and Puerto Vallarta
A recent report from the Mexican Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) reveals that Los Cabos has strengthened its place among the most popular beach destinations in the country, ranking third in terms of hotel occupancy during the first seven months of 2024. The monitoring, carried out by the DataTur system, shows that Los Cabos reached an average hotel occupancy of 80.3%, surpassing important destinations such as Cancun (77.2%) and Puerto Vallarta (73.9%).
Between January and July 2024, hotel occupancy in the monitored beach destinations averaged 68.3%, while in the cities it was 52.8%, according to the DataTur report. Overall, the average hotel occupancy nationwide was 60.2% in this period, reflecting a gradual recovery of tourism after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Compared to the same period in 2023, there was an increase of 0.7 percentage points in hotel occupancy in cities, which denotes stability in the country's tourism growth.
Although Playacar (89%) and Akumal (81.6%) occupied the top positions in hotel occupancy in beach destinations, Los Cabos has managed to position itself above other iconic destinations, such as Cancun and Puerto Vallarta, standing out for its diverse tourist offer and its growing popularity both in the national and international markets.
The growth of Los Cabos as a luxury destination is due to multiple factors, such as its high-end hotel infrastructure, security and its diverse offer of tourist activities, including golf, sport fishing, ecotourism and first-class gastronomy. In addition, the international promotion of the destination and its air connectivity with cities in the United States, Canada and Europe have contributed to the increase in visitors.
Tourism is a key pillar in the economy of Los Cabos. According to the Mexican Tourism Promotion Council (CPTM), tourism revenues in the region have experienced constant growth in recent years, boosting demand for local services and generating more jobs in related sectors, such as transportation and recreational activities.
With its constantly expanding infrastructure and the arrival of new luxury resorts, Los Cabos continues to consolidate itself as a strategic destination in the Mexican tourism landscape, offering a complete experience that attracts tourists from around the world.

The Marine Turtle Protection Network, headed by Carlos Villalobos, has taken an important step in the conservation of the olive ridley turtle with the release of 4,500 hatchlings on the coasts of Cabo San Lucas in a single day. This effort is part of a series of nightly releases, with the expectation of releasing around 14,000 hatchlings in the coming days.
Villalobos shared the success of this release through his social networks, where he thanked the commitment of the volunteers and members of the Protection Network. "It is an arduous and noble task," he said, recognizing the tireless work of those who are dedicated to the preservation of this endangered species.
The release of hatchlings is a crucial action for the survival of the olive ridley turtle, which faces great challenges due to human activity and climate change. These initiatives not only seek to mitigate risks, but also to raise awareness about the importance of protecting marine species.
With the collaboration of volunteers and experts, the Marine Turtle Protection Network continues to work to ensure that more turtles can reach the ocean, increasing their chances of survival and contributing to the conservation of this emblematic species of the coasts of Baja California Sur.

Volaris launches new route between Los Cabos and Oakland to strengthen tourism
With the aim of increasing the competitiveness of Los Cabos as an international tourist destination, the airline Volaris announced a new direct route that will connect this popular Mexican destination with Oakland, California. The route will begin operating in March 2025 and will have a frequency of three flights per week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The flights will be operated by Airbus A320NEO aircraft, with capacity for 186 passengers.
Rodrigo Esponda Cascajares, director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (Fiturca), highlighted that this new route is part of an effort to improve the destination's air connectivity and encourage competition between airlines to offer better rates to travelers. In addition, he mentioned that this is only the beginning of a broader strategy that seeks to attract new markets and consolidate Los Cabos as a first-class destination worldwide.
“There is a lot of competition in the destination, generally this occurs within tourism. “That means we have to continue looking for other markets to be able to continue working,” Esponda said. In this regard, he explained that new routes are being managed that connect Los Cabos with destinations in South America and Europe, in addition to continuing to expand connections with the United States, the main source of tourists to this region of Baja California Sur.
The new route between Los Cabos and Oakland will be a key addition to the US market, by offering California residents a direct flight option to the beaches of Baja California Sur. According to the Volaris website, the estimated duration of the flight will be three hours and eight minutes, and round-trip ticket prices will range between 5,000 and 6,000 pesos.
Esponda stressed that improved air connectivity will be a key factor in the growth of tourism in Los Cabos. In addition, he mentioned that, as the opening of new routes to other countries is completed, a greater diversification of the tourism market is expected. "We continue to work on some routes in South America and Europe," he said, assuring that the strategy seeks to position Los Cabos among the most important destinations internationally.
The arrival of Volaris on this route also represents an opportunity to generate more competition in the air sector, which could translate into more affordable fares for tourists. This measure comes at a crucial time for the tourism sector in Los Cabos, which has experienced constant growth in recent years and seeks to maintain its position as one of the most attractive destinations for national and international tourists.
With the opening of this new air connection and future expansions, Los Cabos continues to consolidate itself as a world-class destination, with a view to receiving a greater number of visitors from various parts of the world in the coming years.

"Marlini 2024" sport fishing tournament announced in Baja California Sur
Representatives of the sport fishing industry, together with authorities from the Baja California Sur (BCS) government, announced the first tournament of the season, scheduled for October 12 and 13, as part of the "Fishing in the Five" series. This event seeks to promote the sport of fishing in the state's five municipalities and contribute to the local economy.
The Marlini 2024 Tournament, which is celebrating its fourth edition, has shown significant growth since its first competitions. In its beginnings, the tournament had just over 30 teams, but this year it is expected to exceed 60 registrations, according to Aristeo González, director of the event. This increase in participation reflects the growing interest in sport fishing in the region.
The tournament will have two main categories: dorado and wahoo. Prizes for the winners include 500 thousand pesos for first place, 250 thousand for second and 150 thousand for third. In the wahoo category, first place will receive 100 thousand pesos, in addition to the jackpots available in both categories. As part of the activities, a children's sport fishing clinic will also be offered, encouraging the participation of the youngest in this discipline.
Martín Insunza Tamayo, head of FONMAR BCS (Fund for the Protection of Marine Resources), highlighted the importance of sport fishing tournaments for the local economy. "The idea is that commercial fishing efforts will be less and that sport fishing will increase because it is more profitable. This sport generates additional income for many local families," he said. Insunza also explained that the fund contributes 50% of the resources destined for the prize pool, thus ensuring the million pesos that will be awarded in total.
Los Cabos, one of the flagship destinations for sport fishing, plays a crucial role in this type of event. Insunza emphasized that the goal is to protect the species, promoting the practice of "catch and release" to ensure the sustainability of sport fishing. "Los Cabos has become aware of not making a slaughterhouse of species and that each fisherman takes only one specimen," he commented.
Finally, Insunza mentioned that conversations have already begun with Christian Agúndez, elected mayor of Los Cabos, to work together with state and local authorities in favor of the development of sport fishing in a sustainable manner. This joint effort seeks to guarantee the balance between the promotion of this sport and the protection of natural resources, ensuring that sport fishing remains a profitable and sustainable activity in Baja California Sur.
The Marlini Tournament is not only an opportunity for fishing enthusiasts, but also an event that leaves a significant economic impact in the region, benefiting hotels, restaurants and local businesses. With the support of the authorities and the commitment of the fishermen, it is expected that the event will continue to grow in the coming years, consolidating itself as a tradition in the region.
