Urban Cleaning: A Crucial Challenge for Tourism in Los Cabos

IMG 0946
Los Cabos, known for its stunning landscapes and luxurious resorts, faces a persistent challenge to its urban image that could affect its ability to attract and retain tourists. Although the destination maintains a high level of satisfaction among visitors, with 96% positive ratings overall, street cleaning and the maintenance of urban infrastructure continue to be areas of concern, according to Rodrigo
EspondaCascajares, director of the Los Cabos Tourism Trust (FITURCA).

In a recent interview, EspondaCascajaresaddressed these concerns, which have been reiterated by the hotel sector and local business associations. "Exit surveys indicate that, although most aspects of a stay in Los Cabos are well received, street cleanliness is a recurring negative point," he explained. These surveys are key instruments that FITURCA uses to evaluate several indicators critical to the visitor experience, including mobility, security, and the quality of infrastructure such as the Marina, roads, and airport.

The challenge of urban cleanliness has intensified since the Fonatur Comprehensively Planned Center (CIP) in Los Cabos formally stopped operating in December 2023. This center was responsible for the administration and maintenance of some of the most important areas of the destination , and its closure has left a void that the Government of Baja California Sur is still trying to fill. Residents, business owners and local authorities have noted a decrease in cleaning and watering green areas, which has contributed to a negative perception among some tourists.

Urban image and cleanliness are crucial factors that influence tourists' decision to return or recommend a destination. "We cannot take for granted that tourists will continue to come if we do not improve in these aspects," EspondaCascajares stressed. Sustainability and the care of cities are increasingly important for travelers, who seek destinations that not only offer natural beauty and high-quality services, but also demonstrate a commitment to the preservation of the environment and the quality of urban life.

The Transformation of the Gulf of California: From Exploitation to Conservation

IMG 0944

At the recent "Pacific Blue" forum, held at the El Ganzo Hotel, Doctor Carlos Sánchez, Professor of Marine Biology at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur, offered a reflective vision on the state of health of the Gulf of California, based on his vast experience of more than 25 years. His presentation was a journey from the history of the exploitation of marine resources to the urgent need for a new culture of conservation.

The History of "Living from the Sea"

Dr. Sánchez began his talk with a retrospective of how people have lived from the sea in different times. "In the 1950s, the idea of living off the sea centered on fishing and the belief in inexhaustible resources," he explained. For decades, Mexican policy promoted the intensive exploitation of these resources, with million-dollar investments and the delivery of boats to fishermen, all under the premise of an endless sea.

This view began to change in recent decades. "By 2010, it was no longer just about extracting resources, but also about the growing tourism industry," Sánchez said. "Living off the sea now also means watching whales and enjoying biodiversity, although we often still fall into tourist overexploitation." The professor highlighted how this transition towards tourism has not been without problems, such as uncontrolled whale watching, where 40% of the activities are not carried out within the permitted regulations.

The Reefs of the Gulf of California

The Gulf of California, known as "the world's aquarium," is home to rich rocky reef ecosystems, rather than the typical coral reefs found in other parts of the world. "Here we have a great diversity of black corals and sea fans, which form 75% of the reef cover," explained Dr. Sánchez. This wealth, however, is threatened by human activity and climate change.

Overfishing has been a recurring issue in the region. "In the 80s and 90s, it was common to see hundreds of sharks in places like Bajo del Espíritu Santo," Sánchez recalled. "Today, these majestic predators are a rarity." Indiscriminate exploitation has led to a notable decline in large fish populations, altering the trophic structure of ecosystems.

Monitoring and Conservation

Since 1998, Dr. Sánchez and his team have carried out a rigorous monitoring program of the reefs of the Gulf of California. This effort has provided a valuable baseline for evaluating changes in marine biodiversity. "We have documented a significant decline in fish biomass over the years," he said. "Last year, 90% of the reefs monitored showed signs of deterioration."

Sánchez's work also highlights the importance of no-fishing areas for the recovery of marine ecosystems. "Places like Cabo Pulmo and Revillagigedo, where fishing is totally prohibited, show a remarkable recovery in just 7 to 12 years," he said. These examples demonstrate that full protection is an effective strategy for restoring ecosystem health.

Future Challenges and Adaptation to Climate Change

In addition to overfishing, climate change poses a new threat to the Gulf of California. "The increase in water temperature is leading to the tropicalization of reefs," Sánchez explained. "Black corals and sea fans, which were traditionally found in colder waters, are starting to bleach." This transformation implies that tropical species could move northward, further altering the dynamics of local ecosystems.

Towards a New Conservation Culture

Dr. Carlos Sánchez concluded his presentation with a call to action: "We need a radical transformation in our culture towards conservation." He advocated "total protection" of key areas and close collaboration between scientists and society to solve environmental problems.

"The Gulf of California still has gems to discover and preserve," he said optimistically. "We must work together so that places like Cabo Pulmo are not the exception, but the norm."

Dr. Carlos Sánchez's talk at the "Azul Pacífico" forum was a powerful reminder of the challenges and opportunities facing the Gulf of California. His message was clear: it is time to change our relationship with the sea, from exploitation to conservation, to ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Pacific Blue: A Forum for Ocean Conservation and Education in Baja California Sur

IMG 0943

This June, Hotel El Ganzo and Puerto Los Cabos, in collaboration with several local and international organizations, have launched "Azul Pacífico", the first annual forum dedicated to ocean conservation, with the aim of promoting education and awareness about marine health. The event, held from June 5 to 7 in San José del Cabo, is a convergence of science, art and community action.

The initiative:

"Azul Pacífico" has been organized with the support of Puerto Los Cabos, the La Playa Community Center, the Pablo Foundation, and the global movements World Ocean Day and Planet Ocean. This forum seeks not only to raise awareness about marine conservation, but also to provide practical solutions and promote collaboration and investment in the sustainable management of ocean resources. Planet Ocean, in particular, plays a key role in presenting Baja California Sur as a case study for research and economic development through sustainable ocean management.

Programming and Activities:

The forum began on June 5 with an evening dedicated to documentaries about marine life, creating an introspective and educational atmosphere for attendees. The next day, June 6, the "Cat for a Hare" Workshop was held at the Crania restaurant, in the community of La Playa. This workshop, organized by Oceana, addressed the problem of substitution of fishing species, a practice that deceives consumers and threatens the sustainability of fishing. Participants learned about sustainable fishing alternatives, vital for the future of the local fishing industry.

Friday, June 7, World Oceans Day, was reserved for a series of educational lectures and activities designed to engage both young people and adults. Featured talks include "Do Whales Like Poetry?" by Fernando Martín Velasco, which fuses literature with marine biology, and "Women Crossing Oceans" by the Oceanida association, which celebrates the role of women in the exploration and conservation of the oceans.

Scientific and Economic Talks:

The event will also include technical talks such as "Coral Gardening as an alternative for sea restoration" by Jorge Cáceres, and "Effects of Warming in the Gulf of California" by Carlos Sánchez, academic at the Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS). . These topics are fundamental to understanding and mitigating the effects of climate change on marine ecosystems.

Additionally, economic opportunities will be explored in the context of the "blue economy", a strategy for sustainable development that emphasizes the responsible use of marine resources to drive economic growth.

Collaborations and Community Participation:

The Mexican Association of Oyster Farmers, the Marine and Coastal Sciences area of the UABCS, and various organizations such as Climatic Rhythms, NoroesteSustentableEspíritu Santo te NECESSARY, Sand Effect, and SomosOceanos, among others, have come together for this event. Their participation reinforces the importance of multi-sector collaboration in marine conservation.

Free access:

It should be noted that "Azul Pacífico" is accessible free of charge to all interested parties, simply by registering through the Boletia platform. This accessibility ensures that knowledge and opportunities to participate in ocean conservation are available to a wide audience.

A Call to Action:

In line with the multi-year action theme launched by the World Ocean Day movement for 2024, "Catalyzing action for our ocean and our climate", "Pacific Blue" emphasizes the urgency of addressing the climate crisis and its devastating effects on the oceans. This forum not only celebrates World Oceans Day, but also seeks to inspire concrete and continued action to protect and preserve our seas.

As the event unfolds, "Pacific Blue" promises to be a beacon of hope and action in the fight for marine conservation, uniting science, community and culture in a symphony of efforts dedicated to the protection of our oceans.
